Leaves serrate or serrulate at margin; veins with scales or stiff hairs, lateral veins many, parallel. Flowers bisexual, in axillary thyrsoid or paniculate cymes, rarely solitary. Bracts small, linear. Sepals 5, imbricate. Petals 5, imbricate, usually connate at base. Stamens many, inserted at base of petals; anthers obtrigonal, dorsifixed, dehiscing by longitudinal slits or by apical pores. Ovary superior, 3–5-locular, with many ovules per locule; styles 3–5, connate at lower half, rarely distinct, stigma simple to discoid. Berry globose or depressed-globose, usually ridged, white to pale green, rarely red. Seeds many, small, brown, buried in pulp, areolate. | |
