Inflorescence terminal, composed of (1–)2(–4) erect, closely appressed racemes; spikelets imbricate in one side, pedicellate spikelets completely absent or reduced to stipe-like, rarely a pistillate spikelet with geniculate awn. Sessile spikelet dorsally compressed, usually bisexual, falling off with internode at maturity; florets 2; lower glume broad, flattened, apex broadly truncate or emarginate, 7(–9)-veined; upper glume boat-shaped, midvein keeled; lower floret staminate; upper floret usually pistillate, seldom bisexual, rarely neuter; upper lemma linear-lanceolate, entire or 2-toothed, awnless or with geniculate puberulous awn, palea shorter and broader, membranous; lodicules absent; stamens 2.
